“Can you make a sample?” is incomplete. The next physical iteration may be intended to test feasibility, proportion, construction, fit, materials, colour, tooling, finishing or production readiness. State the objective first.

A sample built to test silhouette does not need the same authority as a pre-production sample made in final materials and components.

The first sample does not always need final packaging, final colour, every size or production labels. Those requirements depend on the question being tested. The opposite error is more serious: treating a rough exploratory sample as if it were sufficient evidence for bulk production.

Not always. You need enough controlled information for the intended sample objective. Early development can legitimately begin with a structured brief rather than a final production pack.

Should the first sample use final materials?

Only when final material behaviour is essential to what that sample must prove.

Can I ask the manufacturer to recommend construction?

Yes, if product development is within the supplier’s capability and the open decision is clearly identified.

Should I ask for a production quote before the sample?

Indicative costing can be useful, but final cost may remain unstable until material, construction and development questions are resolved.
