Anthropic announced donation of the Agent Skills open standard to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, including its name, logo, GitHub organisation and agentskills.io domain. Skills package specialist procedures in folders containing SKILL.md and optional scripts and references.
Anthropic reports adoption by more than 70 platforms including ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and VS Code, approximately one million published skills and almost 280 million installations. These are producer claims, not independently verified metrics. Announced future foundation security guidance is not an implemented control.
WHY IT MATTERS TO THE MARKET
Cross-platform skill portability can be valuable but does not guarantee safety, reliability or commercial-use rights. Interoperability, instruction provenance, licences, versioning, code execution and permissions require separate treatment.
