REPORTED DEVELOPMENT

Walmart introduced plans for Agent Profiles and a Walmart Agent Gateway to support shopping through third-party AI agents. Agent Profiles are intended to let customers distinguish purchases made by an agent, set spending limits, approve transactions and revoke access without sharing the full authority of the customer account.

Walmart also announced an MCP-based gateway designed to let external agents interact with its commerce systems. The company says customer approvals will remain the default and agents will not receive customers' payment-card details or permission to change payment methods.

Agent Profiles were scheduled for launch in the following month, while the gateway was described as moving into beta for companies and developers. The announcement is not evidence that both services were generally available on 21 October, nor that conversion or revenue gains have been demonstrated.

WHY IT MATTERS TO THE MARKET

If conversational assistants become a shopping channel, retailers and brands will need to decide how agents receive product data, obtain customer consent and execute payments without undermining pricing control or customer relationships. The ability to authorise and revoke transactions may become as important as the shopping interface itself.
