REPORTED DEVELOPMENT

Announcement: 18 September; additional guidance: 28 September.

Microsoft announced a change affecting organisations using legacy Microsoft Teams retention policies to govern Microsoft 365 Copilot conversations. From late October 2026, these policies will begin converting to Teams-only policies, with completion expected by mid-November.

Copilot interactions relying on legacy Teams policies could consequently lose their intended retention or deletion coverage unless a dedicated policy is configured. The change was announced on 18 September, with further guidance on 28 September. Microsoft documentation distinguishes Teams chats from Microsoft Copilot experiences and says a new policy may take up to seven days to take effect.

The configuration is documented by Microsoft; the migration timetable comes from public copies of Microsoft announcements. Conversion in an individual tenant has not been verified.

WHY IT MATTERS TO THE MARKET

Access permissions and effective information retention and deletion policies must be evaluated separately. A general Microsoft 365 or Teams policy should not automatically be assumed to cover Copilot content.
